Handcrafted vs Milled
Handcrafting a log home means that the logs are left in their
natural state and haven't been run through a mill to conform
to a preset size and shape as milled logs are. Handcrafted
homes are first built in a yard where each log is hand selected
depending on the length and diameter that is needed to suit
the design of each home and the customer's preference. Some
customers prefer a rustic look where more of the natural knots
and burls are left, while others prefer a smoother cleaner
look.
The logs are first air dried to achieve the right moisture
content and then meticulously hand peeled to preserve the
natural beauty of each log and grain in the wood. The logs
are then integrated into the shell by hand cutting them to
fit together using the Scandinavian full scribe technique
with "over scribed" corner notches to obtain an
exceptionally tight shrink fit.
Handcrafted logs have a more natural appearance than milled
logs, they are full length, not pieced or butted together
in the wall. The logs have an average diameter between 12-16"
and can be up to fifty feet long, giving the home a massive
feel.
